The past Easter or two I have been thinking about why Jesus had to be resurrected. Why wasn't his sacrifice on the cross the end? Hebrews 9:22 tells us our sins can't be forgiven without Jesus's death, so why wasn't that enough? This morning I got it.
After Christ's death, those who knew him mourned deeply for him, and they knew he was coming back! How can you watch Jesus perform miracles and fulfill prophecies and then not believe him when he says that death won't be the end? Because grief is consuming.
So why wasn't Christ's death the end? Why the resurrection? Because death is only sorrow and life is hope.
We sang "Forever" this morning:
Now death where is your sting?
Our resurrected King
Has rendered you defeated
Forever he is glorified
Forever he is lifted high
Forever he is risen
He is alive, He is alive!
How hopeless if death was the end. Jesus defeated death. Thank you, Lord, that my time on earth is a tiny fraction compared to eternity. Forever in Heaven without an ache in my heart, without suffering, without death. Thank you, Jesus.
Happy Resurrection Day!
